Raise your hand if you've ever traveled to New Orleans! The sights, architecture, music, food, and history of the Crescent City are truly magical. New Orleans is one of our favorite destinations.

It's believed Mardi Gras parades began in New Orleans sometime around 1830. These parades typically run throughout the Carnival season which officially begins on January 6th. The season ends on Fat Tuesday, the day before the start of Lent.

In 1872, a group of businessmen invented a King of Carnival named Rex. Alongside the people in the parades, the King of Carnival tossed sugared treats into the crowds.

By the late 1800s, inexpensive glass bead necklaces began to be tossed into the crowds by the parade krewes. The beads were an instant hit with carnival-goers and coveted to this day.
